Funny thing is that I've even contemplated the idea of baking/cooking through an entire Romanian cookbook. Most amateur cooks rely on written recipes, but what happens when the professionals make a mistake? It uses beef stock, roux and a very generous quantity of horseradish. Sounds doable, but I would sorely miss trying out various international cuisines. HRH Princess Margarita of Romania has launched last Saturday, at the “Gaudeamus book fair” in Bucharest, among a wide acclaim from the public and considerable interest from the press, her new book on culinary subjects. This an excitement and talent which can clearly be found in the Romanian opera soprano, Elena Georgian whom I have the honor of being able to count as one of my friends. I do have to share, that I was very jealous of the Romanian cookbook that we used. Recipes range from traditional kosher dishes such as Matzo Ball Soup and Chicken with Prunes Tsimmes to more contemporary recipes like Korean Kalbi Ribs and Beer Basted Chicken. Romanian Ruminations An eighteenth century cookbook gave a recipe for "Water Gruel," made of oatmeal and water, and flavored with butter and pepper. If I want to know about stuffed matzoh balls, I look at South African cookbooks, because so many Jews from Lithuania, where they made them, moved there. Ma's Romanian-style food was some of the best I've ever eaten.
